  • The rewritings of Pedro Calderón de la Barca's La vida es sueño mark the twentieth century, from Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Der Turm to Pier Paolo Pasolini's Calderón, involving both authors in many draftings. The essay studies the drama in its elaboration and dwells on the setting of part of it in Velazquez's tableau vivant of the Meninas, painting that suggests the most relevant structural innovation in Pasolini's text, «the pain of Rosaura who, among her sisters, stands frontally towards the observers» (first drafting).
