Forma di dono e strumento di pace : la nazione possibile di Marcel Mauss

2022 - Leo S. Olschki

P. 135-157

  • Among the founders of modern French anthropology, just after the Great War Marcel Mauss developed an interest for the idea of nation, planning to make his magnum opus out of this study. A French intellectual, and incidentally Durkenheim's nephew, Mauss started on the topic an interesting conversation, albeit a convoluted one at times. Mauss' nation is reluctantly but surely based on free will; it lacks nationalism, it is peaceful and pacifying, built on the paradigm of gift, and at ease among other nations in the building a unified global society. Mauss never concluded his monumental work as he had imagined; however, his thinking is still relevant and stimulating today, a hundred years later.
