L'apparenza di una brillantissima festa : monarchia e territori nei viaggi del re delle Due Sicilie Ferdinando II nelle Calabrie del 1833 e 1852

P. 91-117

  • The case of the royal travels in the Calabrian provinces, in 1833 and 1852, is very useful to analyze the relationship between the monarchy and the territories in the 19th century Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The arrival of the king Ferdinand II of Bourbon put in place a festive "staging", in which practices, symbols and rituals propose an image of sovereignty and power alternative to traditional forms of dynastic legitimism. Taking advantage of the king's arrival, liberal, radical groups inserted themselves in the celebrations with active roles, and the same was made by other corporate collective action groups, to obtain political and administrative reforms from the sovereign, in particular a liberal constitution, local self-government and a collective management of the commons.
  • Before and after the Revolution of 1848, the royal travels show the evolution of consensus and dissent towards the Bourbon dynasty in the provinces, and outline discontinuities and developments in the relationship between sovereign and territories. The question of commons entered the government agenda, which denied the democratic autonomy of local towns. The king, searching direct contact with the people, proposed an autocratic and paternalistic regime which tended to overcome even the characteristics of the administrative State. [Publisher's text]
