Mega-events and the City : evolving discourses, planning scales, and heritage

  • The relationship between megaevents and cities is changing due to growing criticism and delegitimization regarding the increase of investments towards new venues and infrastructures. This contribution argues that it is useful to learn jointly from different types of both sporting and cultural megaevents. For instance, the European Capital of Culture promotes multiple approaches to reusing existing venues and infrastructures, integrating events into the urban fabric, with a more sustainable size and budget compared to Olympics or Expo. The article considers international case studies to discuss the construction of public narratives, governance and spatial visions, and cultural heritage. It critically reflects on the potential of the MilanoCortina 2026 Olympics to respond to these aspects. [Publisher's text].
  • Il rapporto tra megaeventi e città si sta modificando anche a causa di critiche legate alla crescita esponenziale degli investimenti in attrezzature e infrastrutture. Questo contributo mostra come sia utile apprendere congiuntamente da diversi tipi di megaeventi, non solo sportivi, ma anche culturali. In questo senso, la Capitale Europea della Cultura predilige interventi di riuso di attrezzature e infrastrutture esistenti e di integrazione nel tessuto urbano, con dimensioni e budget più sostenibili rispetto a Olimpiadi o Expo. L'articolo discute le traiettorie di narrazione pubblica, governance e visione spaziale e politiche culturali attraverso casi studio internazionali e propone una riflessione critica in vista delle Olimpiadi MilanoCortina 2026.
