Ricerche : a feminine vote : la stampa americana sul "no" di Jeannette Rankin alla guerra
115-133 p.
- Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected in the American Congress, was among those who voted against US declaration of war with Germany. The author of this essay analyses American newspapers from 1917 to 1918 to understand how they covered Jeannette Rankin's vote. Even though Miss Rankin never hid her pacifist beliefs, newspapers interpreted her vote using stereotypes as the "feminine vote", whether to undermine the fight for women's suffrage or to protect the female purity cliché. Anyway, newspapers failed to assess a political explanation, rather focusing on a gender stereotypical interpretation of her actions [Publisher's text].
