Absorbing Modernity in Spain : the Gran San Blas housing estate in Madrid ... how modern?

  • The question of how orthodox modernity, conceived with an international nature, was absorbed into different countries continues to be a subject of interest. This text covers the study of a specific episode of the history of Spanish urbanism and architecture, focusing on Gran San Blas housing estate, built in Madrid during the late 1950s according to the principles of the International Congresses of Modern Architecture (ciam). The disparity of readings that Spanish architects made of modern orthodoxy is present in this urban intervention, where different architects developed the various units. These projects, analysed in parallel with the theoretical principles that inspired them and with other estates built during the same years in Spain and in France, Italy and Portugal, pose some questions that will enable a debate around the 'nature of their modernity' and how a more or less canonical modernity became established in Spain.   • La questione di come l'ortodossia moderna, concepita con spirito internazionale, sia stata assorbita in differenti paesi è un tema che tuttora suscita interesse. Questo contributo si sofferma su un episodio della storia dell'urbanistica e dell'architettura spagnole, incentrandosi sul quartiere Gran San Blas, costruito a Madrid alla fine degli anni '50 secondo i principi dei ciam. La disparità di letture e interpretazioni che gli architetti spagnoli fecero dell'ortodossia moderna si manifesta in questo intervento in cui i vari lotti furono affidati a diversi architetti. Questi progetti, analizzati in parallelo ai principi teorici a cui si sono ispirati e ad altri quartieri contemporanei in Spagna, Francia, Italia e Portogallo, propongono alcune questioni che aprono il dibattito sulla 'natura della loro modernità' e su come un'urbanistica moderna più o meno canonica si è affermata in Spagna.
