Peter Comestor's Historia Genesis and the Biblical Gloss

  • In this study, I show for the first time the central importance of Comestor's use of the biblical Gloss in the Historia Genesis; it is not one source among many but the most important by far of those Comestor used. Moreover, by examining how Comestor used the Gloss and the sources that went into it, I show that Comestor consulted not only the Gloss but also the primary sources for the excerpts in it. Finally, I show that Comestor, in using the biblical Gloss, reshaped the basic materials of that work into the quite different format of his own. This study shows that a careful study of the sources both of the Gloss and of Comestor's History will be necessary to understand the fortuna of the biblical Gloss in the Paris of the mid-twelfth century.   • Questa ricerca mostra, per la prima volta, l'importanza cruciale dell'uso della cosiddetta Glossa ordinaria nella sezione dell'Historia scholastica di Pietro Comestore dedicata al Genesi. La Glossa non vi è usata come una fonte tra molte: essa è di gran lunga la più importante tra quelle cui il Comestore ricorra. Attraverso l'esame dell'uso che il Comestore fa della Glossa e delle fonti della Glossa stessa, mostro inoltre che il Comestore utilizzò non solo la Glossa, ma fece anche ricorso diretto alle fonti primarie in essa citate. Infine, nel suo uso della Glossa, il Comestore riorganizza il materiale di tale opera dandovi una struttura differente. Lo studio evidenzia la necessità di un esame approfondito delle fonti sia della Glossa che della Historia scholastica per comprendere la fortuna della Glossa nella Parigi della metà del XII secolo.
