What could happen if we simply recognized types of perception and behavior that vary from the norm as different ways in which human neurodiversity inhabits the world, instead of stigmatizing them? Starting from this recognition, would we manage to rethink the design process to cater to the sensory needs of other types of neural wiring, rather than continuing to assume abstract and disembodied requirements? If we welcomed the atypical perceptual experiences of neurodiverse people into the design process, not as a problem but as a resource, it might lead us to view space differently. For example, the dysfunctional features of space that unconsciously influence the wellbeing of a much wider range of people could be revealed through the intensity of the autistic experience [Publisher's text].

Cosa potrebbe accadere se, invece di stigmatizzare percezioni e comportamenti che divergono dalla norma, li si riconoscesse semplicemente come differenti modi in cui la neurodiversità umana abita il mondo? Riusciremmo, partendo da questo riconoscimento, a ripensare la progettazione per rispondere ai bisogni sensoriali di diversi cablaggi neurologici, invece di continuare a considerare esigenze astratte e disincarnate? Accogliere nella progettazione le percezioni atipiche di persone neurodivergenti, non come problema ma come risorsa, potrebbe forse portarci a guardare lo spazio in modo diverso, svelandone all'interno – ad esempio attraverso l'intensità dell'esperienza autistica – quegli aspetti disfunzionali che influenzano inconsciamente il benessere di un numero molto più esteso di persone [Testo dell'editore].
