San Francesco, la povertà che pesa

Nella letteratura e nelle arti dell'età barocca, della paupertas francescana si accentuano i tratti di desolato realismo: non è solo il privilegio dell'imitatio Christi ad litteram ma soprattutto l'accedere alla derelizione di corpi piagati e spenti, come appare in più punti del poema San Francesco, overo Gierusalemme celeste acquistata. Poema sacro, con gli Argomenti, Annotazioni et Allegorie (1618) del frate Agostino Gallucci da Mondolfo; il divino vir patiens è descritto nel suo abietto opprobrium: «perché egli si fa vedere vile, abbietto, mendico, affamato, perseguitato, ingiuriato, tradito, venduto, ligato, flagellato, percosso, vilipeso, impiagato, crocifisso, e morto» e così Francesco «strapazzato e vile». Nel Novecento soltanto Georges Bernanos ha saputo assumere quella irredenta realtà:

«Poiché gli indigenti vi saranno sempre un fardello insopportabile, un peso morto che le vostre civiltà gonfie d'orgoglio si scaricano l'una all'altra con collera e disgusto» (Diario d'un curato di campagna). [Testo dell'editore]

In the literature and arts of the Baroque age, the traits of desolate realism of the Franciscan paupertas are accentuated: it is not only the privilege of the imitatio Christi ad litteram, but above all the access to the dereliction of wounded and dulled bodies, as appears at several points in the poem San Francesco, overo Gierusalem celeste acquistata.
