  • In 1880, the first Italian translation of Spinoza's Ethica was edited by Carlo Sarchi, and in 1915, the first Italian critical edition of it, established by Giovanni Gentile with an important historical-critical apparatus, appeared without a translation. Rejecting the Italian rendering of philosophical works written in Latin, Gentile was highly critical of Sarchi's cultural enterprise and similar ones undertaken in the meantime. The Author reconstructs the history and characters of all of them. With the exception of Erminio Troilo, philosopher and professor, they were all edited by cultivated men from outside the academic world and eager to promote knowledge of Spinoza even among the non-­ expert.
  • When, in 1963, Giorgio Radetti published a new edition of Gentile's critical edition, he enriched it with Gaetano Durante's translation, remaining faithful, in his revision, to historical-philological criteria, but overcoming the ideological and cultural reasons for which Gentile had refused the translation.
