La Secretaria di Apollo di Antonio Santacroce : sulla scia di Boccalini

2022 - Leo S. Olschki

P. 239-252

  • The essay mainly focuses on the contents of one successful political masterpiece by Antonio Santacroce: the epistolary collection La Secretaria di Apollo (1653). This work, widely read and appreciated up to the beginning of the 18th century (as extensively as being translated into English and German), is emblematic of the peculiar context in which Santacroce's literary contribution developed. The article aims at showing the close connection, in Antonio Santacroce's work – exemplary expression of the Baroque age – between literary divertissement and political intent. The author, dramatist and secretary affiliated with the Accademia degli Incogniti, looks to two significant models at that time in vogue: the secretary literature and Traiano Boccalini's masterpiece which become means of reflecting on politics and its mysteries.
