  • The volume offers a new perspective for the study of the mendicant orders between the 13th and 14th centuries through the example of the Servites in central and northern Italy. The study, despite considering a so-called minor order, has made it possible to analyse two essential issues for Western Europe's late medieval history. The first concerns the transformations of religiosity between the 13th and 14th which saw the prominence of new social classes and institutions. The second concerns the urban expansion, the economic growth and the political-institutional and socio-cultural changes that characterised the cities of the time. The Servites were expression and later fine interpreters of these processes, becoming actors who were anything but marginal in the social context of late medieval Italy. [Publisher's text]
  • Il volume si propone di offrire una nuova prospettiva d'indagine per lo studio degli ordini mendicanti tra XIII e XIV secolo tramite l'esempio dei Servi di Maria in Italia centro-settentrionale. Lo studio, nonostante prenda in considerazione un ordine cosiddetto minore, ha permesso di affrontare due questioni cruciali per la storia dell'Occidente bassomedievale: la prima riguarda le trasformazioni della religiosità tra XIII e XIV secolo che videro come protagonisti nuovi ceti e strutture sociali; la seconda concerne invece l'espansione urbana, la crescita economica e i cambiamenti politico-istituzionali e socio-culturali che caratterizzarono le città del tempo. Di questi processi i Servi di Maria furono espressione e in seguito fini interpreti, divenendo attori tutt'altro che marginali nello scenario sociale dell'Italia bassomedievale. [Testo dell'editore]
