- Dante è presente nelle Americhe fin dalle prime esplorazioni europee. Il figlio di Cristoforo Colombo, Hernando, possedeva una copia dell'edizione milanese del 1477 della Commedia. Possiamo immaginarlo mentre legge Dante sotto il sole dei Caraibi, in quello che gli europei consideravano ancora il mondo senza gente. Le prime allusioni alla Commedia nelle Americhe si trovano negli scritti di alcuni esploratori del XVI secolo. - Dante has been present in the Americas ever since the first European explorations. The son of Christopher Columbus, Hernando, possessed a copy of the 1477 Milanese edition of the Commedia. We can picture him reading Dante under the Caribbean sun, in what the Europeans still considered il mondo senza gente. The earliest allusions to the Commedia in the Americas can be found in the writings of several sixteenth-century explorers. Since then, Dante has been a constant presence in the literatures of the Americas, from Walt Whitman and Melville in the North to Machado de Assis and Borges in the South. [Publisher's text]
