In 1845, Dietrich Arnold Reimer founded the Dietrich Reimer book and map business withthe maxim of only bringing serious and useful books to market. In addition to publishing geographical and cartographic works, the publishing house also devoted itself to archaeology and what was then called "art objects" from the very beginning. Dietrich Reimer's successors expanded the publishing spectrum to include the disciplines of ethnology, linguistics, geography, natural sciences, archaeology, oriental studies and Byzantine studies.
