Il momento Lacordaire

2020 - Editoriale Scientifica

44-78 p.

  • Henri Lacordaire was a leading figure in the history of Nineteenth-Century French Liberal-Catholicism. He aroused wide interest in the early years of the July Monarchy as an influential preacher in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. Then, he played a prominent role in the Revolution of 1848. Finally, despite being in opposition to Napoleon III, he was elected at the Académie Française in the culminationg years of the Second Empire. Thanks to his exceptional and often provocative intellectual performances, Lacordaire was constantly in the public eye. Through the lens of this peculiar and influential figure, this essay aims to show the profound transformations concerning political and religious institutions as well as modes of thinking in an epoch marked by the shadow of the French Revolution and by the dawning of a fully accomplished modernity.
