Immagine e parola

Fabrizio Serra Editore
• At the beginning of the new millennium Western culture had to face entirely new scenarios thus causing the deterioration of the interpretative and taxonomic categories that dealt with the unclear phase of the culture of modernity and its developments which led to the unprecedented, varied and multicultural contemporaneity. In this unusual setting, although the entire universe of expressive and interpretative categories which have characterized the cultural system has changed, what maintains its centrality is the dialectics between image and word, both constantly active polarities, with a peculiarity that seems to continue to work in order to overcome the limits of its statute, on the line of a tradition that has expertly articulated this dialectics.
  • When one attempts to describe the complex modes in which image and word today interweave by constantly refocusing their identities - in the most diverse perspectives: semiotic, linguistic, historical, aesthetic, anthropological - one must recount innumerable events in the history of culture from the birth of a meta-artistic consciousness and of the awareness of the act of writing as a tool and an opportunity to deal with the semantic, symbolic, hermeneutic values of the work. The idea of an art that lives through words and images means that the textual organization is founded on a network of signs, acting from various expressive and narrative modes.
  • This is the complex reality of the dialectic between image and word, which after centuries of history remains the most fertile ground for an unprecedented balance of the past and an innovative design for the future. The journal intends to deal with the debate mentioned before, with special focus both on the episodes that have historically characterized the relationship between the two universes, as well as the innumerable theories that have accompanied artistic practice throughout the centuries, with articles on the arts - "in vitro and theoretically” - which will allow to "narrate” the images, "paint” the words, and render "the talk visible”.
